Hubbub

Giles SwayneGZ104
Solo flute | SATB soloists | SATB choir | Duration: 4½ minutes

Commissioned by Jack and Linda Hoeschler of St. Paul, Minnesota for the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge. First performed on 4th September 2010 in King’s College Chapel, Cambridge by the choir of Clare College, Cambridge under Timothy Brown, with Daniel Pailthorpe (flute). USA premiere: 24th September 2010, University of St Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, by the choir of Clare College, Cambridge under Timothy Brown, with Nicholas Mogg (flute). The poem by Kevin Crossley-Holland deals with the fragility of spirituality in a confused world. The flute is a songbird compromised by its environment, mindlessly garbling mobile phone ringtones – themselves garbled melodies. Its natural song survives – but only just.
